Hole by Hole Commentary by Professional Mike Swim

Hole #1 360 yards / par 4
A straight hole, a good drive will leave a mid iron to the green.  This hole is generally down wind, so keep that in mind when choosing a club.   As with most holes at Champlain, you want to avoid going over the green.

Hole #2 480 yards / par 5
A slight dog-leg right with a grouping of trees in play off the tee on your right forces you to stay left and lengthen the hole.  A well placed second shot leaves a short iron up the hill to an elevated green.  Bunkers left, right, and long are best avoided as this green slopes back to front.

Hole #3 160 yards / par 3
A down hill tee shot to a green protected with a bunker on the right and a mound front left leaves little room to run the ball onto this green.  This a tricky par 3.

Hole #4 377 yards / par 4
A slight dog-leg right with O.B. right.  You cannot see the green from the tee but a good tee shot will give you a good view for your second shot.  The water hazards left and right makes you think on the tee, lay up or go for it!

Hole #5 355 yards / par 4
Maybe the easiest hole par four on the course. No big problems off the tee unless you go way left into the reeds or too far right and O.B.  For you long hitters, there is a fairway bunker which come into play. A bunker on the left side of the green  is the only hazard by this two tiered green.

Hole #6 365 yards / par 4
This hole looks easier than it really is.  The fairway bends slightly to the right off the tee.  However, go too far right and you are blocked out by trees, or maybe even out of bounds.  Your second shot is up hill to a right to left green.  Bunkers front left and right are manageable, but not recommended.

Hole #7 140 yards / par 3
This hole offers you a scenic view of historic Lake Champlain, and the green side pond on the left. Avoid the water to the right and have a mound to deal with.   Put it on the green and putt for birdie.  Get wet and chip from the drop zone.

Hole #8 355 yards / par 4
A drive to long left or right can put you in tree trouble which may block out your second shot.  The small, hard, green doesn't hold long iron shots very well.  The slight elevation of the green makes it difficult to run the ball onto the green.  Go right and end up O.B. or in a tough green side bunker. Go too far left and end up in the other bunker.

Hole #9 350 yards / par 4
This hole plays long as it is all up hill. Your tee shot could be the most important shot with trees right and left.  Bunkers back left and right might keep your ball in play but the sand shot lands on the green that runs away from you.

Hole #10 303 yards / par 4
A tee shot down the center will leave a short wedge to the green.  Sound simple?  Wait until you get on this tiny, sloping green.  Or worse yet, put your second shot over it.  Keeping your come back chip on the green is nearly impossible.   Some players lay up off the tee to avoid the half wedge shot.

Hole #11 445 yards / par 4
Yes, it's only a par four, but it will feel like a par 5 unless you get off the tee well.  Your second shot must carry the pond and be true as you make your way between the trees to the elevated green.  Five on this hole will feel like a good par.

Hole #12 145 yards / par 3
This is an easy hole, unless you go to far left or right off the tee.  One bunker right of this tricky green is your other obstacle. The green is hard and sloped, which calls for some touch putting.

Hole #13 375 yards / par 4
What you see is what you get. Stay out of the ditch - - or else!  A good drive will carry it and then it's straight away to the green with a single bunker left.   There is plenty of room left but right off the tee finds the hazard.

Hole #14 170 yards / par 3
The wind can make all the difference in whether this is a tough par 3 or a hard par 3. A straight tee shot pays puts you on a two-tier green.  End up on the wrong tier, and you face one of your toughest putts of the day.  The pond should not be in play but the right and left green-side bunkers require an accurate tee shot.

Hole #15 560 yards / par 5
This hole requires a good drive and a good fairway wood to get you in range of the green.  This green hard to hit in two shots, so don't overswing and cost yourself more strokes.  Bunkers left and long, a good third shot will leave you in birdie position before hitting the difficult finishing holes.   This green is small and difficult to chip to.

Hole #16 338 yards / par 4
A sharp dog-leg right.  If your drive is too short or too far right, you will be forced to chip out to the corner and be down a stroke going to an elevated green.  A tee shot that is straight and between 200 - 220 yards should clear the corner just fine.  Stay out of the green side bunkers to save another stroke.

Hole #17 415 yards / par 4
A slight dog-leg right, a good drive is critical to reach the green in regulation.  Don't try to cut the corner too much or you might find yourself in the hazard right.  The green  is protected by bunkers on both sides.  Going long puts you in a position of chipping up a steep bank to the green which runs away from you.  This is not where you want to end up.

Hole #18 315 yards / par 4
Don't let this finishing hole fool you.  It may be a short par four, but the second shot is crucial.  The hole is all up hill to a steep back to front sloping green.  Leaving yourself a down hill putt is not the way you want to finish your round.  This green is also protected by deep bunkers on both sides and behind the green.
