Welcome back Spring!

I think spring is finally starting here at Champlain Country Club. We can see fairways and the greens are starting to get some color. As they come out of dormancy it is very important to stay off of them. They need time to dry out so they’ll be ready to provide you with great playing conditions all season long. The crew and I are busy cleaning up from the ice storm last month. We didn’t lose anything big, just a lot of branches everywhere.

We are planning a busy spring full of projects. The new forward tee on # 17 is taking shape and will be seeded early may. We will expand the men’s tee on # 14 as soon as the turf is workable. The bunker renovation will start on # 3 along with some extra drainage between the bunker and the cart path. All of this will take time. I thank you in advance for patients and understanding. We are building you a better course.

Now, what you have all been waiting for. I am planning on having green up day on April 19th from 8AM till Noon. Please come and help out if you can. Every little bit helps! The course will be open for play at noon. Green uppers first.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the board of directors for approving our new equipment lift in the shop. The lift is a vital tool in our equipment maintenance plan. It will save time and help provide better playing conditions through better maintained machines. Please stop by anytime if you would like to see it or if you have any questions.

Let’s get ready to GOLF!!!

April Newsletter

Happy spring to all!  The only funny thing is while I’m writing this it’s snowing outside.  The nice part is there won’t be a long wait as there’s very little snow left and the course is looking ready for the season.  You’ll see mostly familiar faces back in the Golf Shop Operations for this year (a little more aged and gray haired) the same friendly faces to greet you and your guests.   The Pro Shop will be open limited hours until course opening.  Feel free to call or stop by to say hello, pick up membership forms or to check out the course conditions.  We should have bag tags, event schedule and clubhouse chits ready the week of April 14th.  Remember, each new member you sign up is a $50.00 check to you!

Upcoming events in April are: Master Tournament gathering in clubhouse on Sunday 13th in afternoon and Green up Day / course opening on Saturday 19th.  For those of you that haven’t picked up a club this winter it’s a good idea to do some stretching before you venture out on the links.  Remember, stretching and flexibility will add distance and decrees injury!  Good chance warm up area will open before the course so call ahead.

Get new clubs for Christmas?  If you didn’t and stored clubs in garage or attic you might want to check you grips and bring them in for spring specials.  Also golf balls stored in cold tend to loose their “zing” so update you supply.  My one “must” suggestion for the spring is to take a lesson early on so you can blame the pro all year for messing your swing up when bad shots come around!  This spring you’ll find me coaching the BFA girls golf team and working with grade schools with a golf in school program run through the Vermont PGA.  Also this summer “Play with the Pro” days will be available either at Champlain or at away courses so keep posted.  Check out the new look on the web site and watch for more news and results.

Look forward to seeing everyone real soon.

New Clubs

Carl and Dave were getting ready to tee off on the first hole when Dave noticed that Carl got a new set of clubs.
Dave asked Carl how he liked the clubs and if they've helped his game at all.
Carl replied, "Oh yeah, they're great clubs! They've added at least 25 yards to my slices, about 30 yards to my hooks and you would be surprised at the size of my divots!"

Big Shooter Quotes

There are three ways to improve your golf game: Take lessons, practice constantly...or start cheating!

Forget about all those "How To.." books and videos. The only sure way to save strokes is with an eraser!

The difference between a whiff and a practice swing is that nobody curses after a practice swing.

Golf is not a matter of life and death. It's a lot more important than that.

Golf is a a game where the ball lies poorly, and the players well.

Nothing dissects a man in public quite like golf.

The number one thing about trouble is...don't get into more.

Golf is like any other sports competition. There's not a lot of point to it unless someone suffers. ...even, if it's you.

The Big Shooter

Kicked Ball

A group of golfers were putting on the green when suddenly a ball dropped in their midst.

One of the party winked at the others and kicked the ball into the hole. Seconds later a very fat player puffed on to the green quite out of breath and red of face.

He looked round distractedly and asked: "Seen my ball?"

"Yeah, it went in the hole," the joker answered with a straight face. The fat one looked at him unbelievingly.
Then he walked to the hole, looked in, reached down and picked up his ball. His astonishment was plain to see.

Then he turned, ran down the fairway and as he neared his partner the group on the green heard him shout:
"Hey, Sam, I got an eleven."
